THC % vs Terpenes in UK Medical Cannabis
Short answer, THC tells you how hard the engine pulls, terpenes decide how the car handles. If you want raw power, look at THC. If you want a specific, repeatable effect, pay attention to terpenes.
What THC % actually tells you
THC percentage is a measure of potency by mass. More THC often means stronger intoxication, although it is not a straight higher equals better situation. Above a certain point, many patients report the high becomes blunt and less nuanced. In practical terms, high twenties THC can easily drown out subtle flavour and effect cues if the terpene content is weak or has degraded during storage and processing.
What terpenes actually do
Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give cannabis its smell and a lot of its character. Think citrus, pine, lavender, pepper. More importantly, they shape the direction of the experience. Myrcene leans relaxing, limonene leans uplifting, pinene supports focus, linalool calms, caryophyllene can help with inflammation and stress. The overall profile is the steering and suspension, it decides whether the ride is sleepy, bright, focused, or messy.
The crossover, when one outweighs the other
- Below about 18% THC, terpene profile can dominate. A terpene rich 16% flower can feel stronger and more effective than a bland 24% option.
- Between about 18% and 24% THC, you get a tug of war. Both matter. Terpenes still steer, THC provides the push.
- Above about 25% THC, THC intensity tends to overpower nuance for many patients. Dominant terpenes still tilt the vibe toward sedating or energising, but the experience is more forceful.
In oils where terpenes are minimal or stripped, ratios like THC to CBD become the main dial. In full spectrum preparations that preserve terpenes, the terpene influence is easier to notice, especially when CBD moderates THC intensity.
Common terpenes at a glance
| Terpene | Typical aroma | Typical direction of effect |
|---|---|---|
| Myrcene | Earthy, musky, tropical | Relaxing and sedating, useful for evening and sleep support |
| Limonene | Citrus peel | Uplifting mood, can feel brighter and cleaner |
| Pinene | Pine, rosemary | Alertness and focus, may help mental clarity |
| Linalool | Lavender, floral | Calming and anxiety reducing, sleep friendly |
| Caryophyllene | Pepper, wood, spice | Anti inflammatory and stress relief, interacts with CB2 |
| Humulene | Woody, hoppy | Anti inflammatory, sometimes appetite reducing |
How to choose in the UK context
- Start with your goal. Sleep, pain, anxiety, focus, or appetite. Choose terpenes that match the goal, then pick a THC range that you tolerate well.
- Prefer mid THC with strong terpenes for consistent medical outcomes. Many patients find 16 to 22 percent THC with a rich terpene profile gives the best quality to strength ratio.
- Check freshness and handling. Irradiation, poor curing, or long storage can flatten terpene expression. Recent labs are your friend.
- Cross reference cultivar profiles. Use UK community resources like MedBudWiki to see common terpene patterns for the product name you are being offered. Names are imperfect, but the data helps.
Quick buying checklist
- What are the top three terpenes, and are they aligned with my goal
- What is the THC range, and how did I respond to this range before
- How recent is the certificate of analysis, and does it list terpenes, not just cannabinoids
- Do I have a daytime and a nighttime option, so I am not forcing one product to do every job
CBPM Cost and Dosage Prototype, understand your THC intake
Trying to work out how much THC you’re actually using, what it costs, and whether a tolerance break might help? I built a simple tool that turns your prescription details into something you can actually reason about.
- Estimate THC per day and per month (based on your product and usage)
- Spot when “creeping tolerance” is doing the spending for you
- Plan tolerance breaks with real numbers, not vibes
- Budget your CBPM costs without spreadsheets and headaches
